Background
I have been involved with the personal computer my whole life. I was fortunate to have a second model IBM PC at the age of two. I could manipulate my way though DOS and load programs as quickly as my parents. At 5, my father setup a spreadsheet on Lotus 1-2-3 to help me document my hockey cards. I modified this spreadsheet to my liking and improved on it constantly. In primary school, I was exposed to Apple computers and remember spending hours using Hypercard to create animations, as much as my teach allowed, and even a little more!
I was very fortunate to have a class with an amazing teacher, Mrs. Darke, 3 days a week during grades 6 to 8. She introduced us to HTML programming in the early 1990′s at the time of the birth of the internet. We used text editors on Macintosh computers to produce websites. Meanwhile, at home I would log onto local Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) to communicate with other technology oriented people. I quickly discovered the underground of the computer world and took an interest in learning everything I can about ‘hacking’ and ‘cracking’. This lead me to start to learn how to program small scripts for various uses using primitive languages (Dos Batch files, basic). If I wasn’t learning, I was gaming. I made sure I kept up to date with the hardware advances to keep the games running smoothly.
Into high school and the rapid growth of the internet. Everybody at school was online. ICQ became the messaging service of choice among my peers. I came across some software designed to infiltrate the connection between users on the ICQ network and download a program onto a remote computer. I would use this on my friends to make their CD drives open and close or take control of their keyboards. In computer class at school, I occasionally would take over the entire lab and make the teacher have a small heart attack.
My fascination with the internet grew. I found communities of games to play online games with and exchange ideas. I found other mischievous things I could do but my goodwill kept me away from any misdemeanors. I designed and programmed various web pages for scholastic and personal use. This interest lead to my choice of attending a college for Computer Program – Humber college was the choice.
At Humber, it was all hands-on, exactly what I needed to further my computer knowledge. Each class was an indepth, hands-on approach to a different programming language. Java, C++, Cobol, PHP, SQL, Visual Basic (then onto .NET), Oracle suite, and more. The other time was spent on the project approach, systems development life cycle, Unified Modeling Language, proper approaches for data projects, and hardware interfaces. I left Humber with the ability to write code in a variety of language and interpret other languages. Once someone has a firm grasp on a few computer languages, the time required to learn a new language is fractional.
I took this computer-savy knowledge into the corporate world. I was hired into the purchasing department at a division of Bombardier. At the time, they were converting their systems from an archaic, text-based system to SAP. I was brought on to help with the data-migration process and stayed with the company as an Expediter, a link between the customer service and purchasing departments to ensure on-time deliveries. My time was spent doing the functions of an expediter while aiding all the employees learn how to use the new SAP system. I was transfered into a newly formed Business Analysis department in an Analyst role. My directives were to work out bugs and improve the current SAP system, prepare my division for the global SAP implemenation, document business and systems processes, and provide help documents for all user roles. This new role gave me an amazing perspective on what it takes for a corporation to effectively and efficiently do business. I had access to every aspect of the system and it was my job to ensure all problems were worked out – and there were problems!!
It is with everything I have learned and keep learning that I now bring my services to the business world. I want to help businesses achieve and surpass their goals. My experiences have taught me how important it is for businesses to have excellent systems on the inside and a carefully marketed image to the public.
